The fight for justice goes on! #backatayyab
In September last year we got the shocking decision by the Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket) to deport our colleague Tayyab Shabab because of an administrative error by a previous employer.
As our founder Mathias wrote in the article “Welcome to the Banana Republic of Sweden”, we think it was an incorrect decision and that Migrationsverket has interpreted the law incorrectly. We got help from Centrum för Rättvisa to make an appeal to the Migration Court (Migrationsdomstolen) and were very optimistic the the outcome would be positive.
Now, the Banana Republic strikes back! This week the Migration Court decided to reject the appeal, so Tayyab and his wife are once again told by the authorities to leave Sweden, their apartment and all their friends and colleagues in a number of weeks. WTF again!
The good news is that:
– The decision was split. Half of the jury actually voted in favour of Tayyab!
– Politicians have been discussing the case on a government level and Morgan Johansson, Minister of Justice and Migration, has promised to change the law before summer.
So, the next step will be to appeal to the highest migration court in Sweden, the Migration Court of Appeal (Migrationsöverdomstolen). We are hopeful that they will reconsider this decision and let Tayyab and his wife stay in Sweden where they belong.
Meanwhile, we are all standing firmly behind Tayyab and everyone else who is facing the same ridiculous problem. We may have lost this battle, but we will win the war!
